Program Overview

The BRI International Delegation Forum (BRIeF) is a comprehensive 5-day program designed for professionals in the microfinance, banking, and development sectors. The course combines 2 days of in-class training at BRI`s Head Office in Jakarta with 3 days of field visits in Jakarta or/and West Java to observe BRI`s microbanking practices and community empowerment efforts.

Why This Course is Needed:

Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) is a global leader in financial inclusion and microbanking, a legacy that began in 1895. Over decades, BRI has become a model for sustainable microfinance and community-driven empowerment. The global microfinance community recognizes BRI's success as one of the most impactful stories in the sector, with well-known advocates such as Jay K. Rosengard and Marguerite S Robinson highlighting the significance of BRI`s work on the international stage.

BRI's Evolution:

BRI began as a village bank offering agricultural credit, evolving over time into a global leader in microfinance. The Bimas program, introduced in 1970, significantly expanded financial services to Indonesia's rural communities. By 1984, BRI commercialized its microbanking services, transforming village units (unit desa) into self-sustaining rural banks.

Today, BRI's microbanking segment, with a loan portfolio of Rp 491.2 trillion, comprises 40.4% of BRI's total loan portfolio. The segment is supported by an extensive network of over 7,500 physical outlets, 796,084 e-channels, and 1.1 million BRILink agents, making BRI Indonesia’s largest microfinance provider. In 2024, microbanking contributed 38.6% to the bank’s Net Income, highlighting its significant role in driving profitability and underscoring the critical importance of microbanking in BRI's continued growth and success.

Global Recognition:

BRI’s remarkable journey has been celebrated by prominent microfinance experts. Jay K. Rosengard famously referred BRI as “the world’s best-kept financial inclusion secret”. Recognized as the Best SME Bank in Indonesia, BRI’s leadership has earned it numerous accolades, including the Asset Triple A Award for Sustainable Finance in 2025. Its ongoing work in digital transformation and inclusive finance has not only strengthened its position in Indonesia but has also influenced global microfinance practices.
